The 9th Nordic Grouting Symposium NGS2019 was held in Helsinki, Finland on September 2-3, 2019 and was organized by the Finnish Tunnelling Association FTA and Finnish Association of Civil Engineers RIL and endorsed by International Tunnelling Association ITA and Finnish National Group of ISRM. The Nordic Grouting Symposium is arranged approximately every third or fourth year in some Nordic country. Next one will be in Sweden in 2022.
The symposium had 120 participants from 17 countries, so, many outside Nordic countries. Ten organizations sponsored the symposium. A total of 22 technical papers were orally presented in the technical sessions covering different grouting topics such as recent development and innovations, case studies, grouting strategy, groutability, grout penetration, grout pressure, investigations for grouting design, grouting modelling and models, testing and future trends. The NGS2019 Symposium had three keynote presentations given by Eivind Grøv Norway, Jari Heikkilä Finland and Thomas Dalmalm Sweden and one invited lecture given by Mohamed El Tani Lebanon (member of ISRM Grouting Commission).
Technical excursion was arranged to visit recently renovated Suomenlinna (World Heritage site) subsea emergency and service tunnel. The social program included the Symposium dinner at the restaurant Kappeli in the down town of Helsinki.
The symposium proceedings with 232 pages was published electronically for the participants. Others interested can obtain the technical papers through homepage (www.ngs19.fi). The symposium was considered very successful based on the participants’ feedback giving the overall symposium mean score of 4.2 (1 poor….5 excellent).
